Cugir’s JUST STREETS Work Recognised for Co-Creation and Public Administration

Cork Lifelong Learning Festival - Ireland
Cugir took part in the Learning City Conversations, held within the Cork Lifelong Learning Festival, bringing together member cities of the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities, international experts, and representatives of the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning. Cities from across Europe and beyond were among those present.
The city’s work within JUST STREETS was presented as a best practice in urban co-creation and community learning. Key initiatives included School Streets, Green Friday, and participatory planning of cycling infrastructure — demonstrating how behaviour change and civic participation can be built over time.

Cities of Tomorrow Conference - Romania
At national level, Cugir was selected as a finalist in the public administration category at the Cities of Tomorrow conference in Bucharest.
The presentation outlined the city’s transition from a car-centred context towards community engagement and active mobility, including the use of participatory tools such as walkshops, local partnership development, and the implementation of the School Street concept.

"JUST STREETS is more than a mobility project — it is a tool for community learning and social transformation. We are not only building infrastructure, but also relationships, behaviours, and a culture of participation."
— Cugir JUST STREETS Team
This understanding of street transformation is also captured in a short film produced within JUST STREETS on Cugir, showing how the focus shifted from infrastructure to involving people in the process of change.
Cugir’s recognitions reflect the broader impact of JUST STREETS beyond the Pilot Cities, showing how locally developed approaches contribute to international dialogue on sustainable, people-centred urban development.
