Beyond the Conference Room: 4 JUST STREETS Urban Walk Guides Tested in Ljubljana
Street transformation shouldn't only happen in conference rooms. That was the premise behind a field session at Urban Future. The Better-Cities Event in March 2026, organised by our JUST STREETS partner Urban Future, where participants took the walk guides out of the room and onto a real Ljubljana street.
Field trip participants tested the Urban Walk Guides on the streets of Ljubljana, observing how justice is experienced in everyday public spaces.
A Street Justice Field Session
During the session "Street Justice: Reclaiming Space Together," attendees walked the corridor between Ljubljana's railway station and the city centre together with city officials, researchers, and practitioners.
Along the way, they:
tested low-cost air quality measurement tools
analysed space, conflicts and accessibility on site
developed concrete recommendations for the City of Ljubljana.
The walk invited participants to experience the street through the lens of justice, exploring mobility, public life, parking, pedestrian zones and active ground floors - and to question assumptions about what makes a street work for everyone. As the session put it: "Justice in streets is not a theory. It becomes visible when you stand in the street itself."
JUST STREETS partners introduced the Urban Walk Guides before participants explored the route using maps, prompts and observation tools.
The Four Walk Guides
This corridor became the testing ground for four new Urban Walk Guides developed by our consortium partners:
Human Scale & Accessibility
Safety & Perceived Risk
Who Owns the Space and Who Decides?
Citizen Science & Street Intelligence.
Who They're For
Designed for planners, NGOs, students, researchers and local stakeholders, they're built to be adapted to different urban contexts, whether for a workshop, a field visit, or independent exploration.
